Now we&#8217;ll simulate failure cases, check recover behavior, and confirm if DNS has failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Access Validation to The Application<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the new launch template, let&#8217;s re-run the new auto scaling group to ensure the same landing page is accessible via our ALB. Ensure we can access the application properly via the ALB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1492\" (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In case there is any issue in accessing the application, please check the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check your <strong>Target Group health<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure EC2 instances are running and in service <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confirm your <strong>security group<\/strong> allows HTTP (port 80)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: <strong>Simulate EC2 Instance Failure<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, we will test the auto scaling group ability by stopping \/ terminating one of the EC2 instance within ASG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <strong>EC2 \u2192 Instances<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select one instance in the Auto Scaling Group <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Instance state \u2192 Stop instance<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"156\" initialize a new instance to replace the stopped instance<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"156\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Simulate ALB Failure, Observe DNS Failover<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we are testing whether the Route 53 fails and it will detect via its health checking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <strong>EC2 \u2192 Auto Scaling Groups<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set <strong>desired, min desired and max desired capacity = 0<\/strong> (this removes all EC2 instances)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1069px) 100vw, 1069px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Then if we access our domain \/ ALB public DNS we should be redirected to the static failover site on S3 bucket as per sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 697px) 100vw, 697px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once tested, we can reset back the ASG instance to the desired values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this project we have demonstrated the AWS reliability principles such as<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Redundancy<\/strong><br>Across AZs for all critical components like EC2 instance and EFS<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Monitoring<\/strong><br>Continuous and layered health checks and alert such as at DNS level (Route 53) and compute level (load balancer)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Self-healing<\/strong><br>Adaptability for the service to handle the failure such as Auto Scaling Group and DNS failover (Route 53)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Isolation<\/strong><br>Layered design that give clarity in term of boundary and responsibility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In more mission-critical services for production realm, we also can consider the following principles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Automated backups and snapshots<\/strong><br>Using AWS backup to automate and schedule RDS snapshots and configure EFS backup to ensure the durability as part of disaster recovery<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cross-Region Failover<\/strong><br>Using Route 53 to do the health check on the region level and automatically deploy application in another region in
